Disneyland - last one!
One last note about Disneyland - the first time I went was a surprise from my mom - I remember sleeping in the back of the station wagon with my sisters and waking up finding out where we were going when we woke up in LA. The highlight from that trip was thinking I was really driving the boat with mom as my passenger. Could be I remember that because I have the photo but it is back home...
I also went a few times with kind Aunt Sue and Uncle Ron and family and being there brought back so many laugh out loud memories of Uncle Ron who sadly passed too early. He is rumored to have gotten off the Pirates of the Caribbean mid-ride, but I wasn't there for that maybe someone else can share about that one. Here are a few of mine:
Riding a creaky wooden roller coaster in Denver with the bar that stopped at his tummy - about a foot above mine. He insisted I put my arms in the air...
Convincing me the mailbox I had just put Aunt Sue's bills in was the trash instead of mailing them from his classic Mustang window - it didn't seem right but he was so adamant I believed him...
Scratching his back while watching Jesus Christ Superstar on the first VCR I ever saw...
Being teased about playing doctor with the kid up the street which I didn't know what meant but I could tell wasn't good...
Shy little me being sent into a liquor store intentionally short a quarter to buy him a pack of cigarettes just to see what I would do. Turns out that the guy behind me in line with his girlfriend and his Playboy gave it to me and Ron was laughing from the car as I returned, having watched the whole time...
Being taught the Cal fight song...
And finally, running into him as an adult at the Marin Civic Center him doing his lawyer thing and me serving jury duty and having a warm conversation and a hug. While I'm at it I also remember the wonder of making an apple pie from scratch during my week visit with the Silveiras in summer.
I wish I could post pictures (on computer at home) of our visit to the Silveira ranch last summer where Anthony showed us all around and gave ATV rides to the next generation with wry commentary from Aunt Sue throughout. I keep the peacock feather I picked up from the wild ones around in my classroom as a reminder of that happy day.
Thanks for the many happy summer vacations Sue and Ron!
